Rolling steel or sectional warehouse door: identify the opening

A plain-language equipment description helps a commercial provider prepare the right assessment.

Look at how the door is arranged

A rolling steel door uses a curtain of connected slats that coils above the opening. A sectional overhead door has hinged horizontal panels that move along tracks. Identify these features only from a safe viewing position. A high-speed opening may use a fabric, rubber, or rigid system, so its speed alone does not tell you the construction or repair scope.

Describe the operator separately

Tell the provider whether the door is operated manually or by a powered operator, if known. Record the operator make and model or visible fault display without approaching damaged equipment. A door and its operator are connected systems, but an operator symptom does not establish which component failed. Include both in your description instead of requesting a replacement motor based on a guess.

Flag specialized requirements

Mention any known fire rating, temperature-controlled space, sanitation requirement, or access-control integration. A label or existing facility record is more useful than an assumption about the opening. Specialized equipment may require additional qualifications or parts and should be identified before a service visit. The contractor confirms the scope it can accept.

Use the description in your request

Give the facility, bay, door arrangement, observed failure, security or shipping impact, and contact window. Approximate dimensions are helpful when already documented; do not measure a damaged assembly to complete the form. If several openings need attention, identify each separately. You can select “Not sure” on the request form and describe the visible condition instead.
